University of Galway Men’s Gaelic Football Club is one of the university’s longest-established sporting clubs, with a proud history dating back to 1910. The club first competed in the Sigerson Cup, Ireland’s premier intervarsity Gaelic football competition, winning the competition in 1912.
Today, the club caters for players of all levels and fields Senior, Intermediate, Junior and two Freshers teams each season, providing opportunities for students to compete at both elite and recreational levels. The club committee works alongside the University’s Gaelic Games staff and management teams to oversee the day-to-day running of the club, including training, fixtures, player development and club activities.
The club’s training sessions and home fixtures take place at the University of Galway GAA Grounds in Dangan Sports Centre, located off the Upper Newcastle Road. The facilities provide a dedicated base for the club’s teams throughout the season. The traditional club colours are maroon, white and green, with maroon serving as the primary colour and white as the secondary colour with a green trim. These colours are proudly worn by University of Galway footballers in training and competition. With over a century of history, a strong tradition of intervarsity competition and teams catering for players at every level, University of Galway Men’s Gaelic Football Club continues to play an important role in the university’s sporting community.
University of Galway Men’s Gaelic Football Club is one of the oldest and most successful sporting clubs within the university, with a proud history stretching back to 1910.
The university is among the most successful institutions in the history of the Sigerson Cup, Ireland’s premier third-level Gaelic football competition. University of Galway currently sits second in the Sigerson Cup roll of honour with 23 titles, behind UCD with 31. The university’s successes span several decades, with a particularly dominant period from the 1930s through to the 1970s. The most recent Sigerson Cup triumph came in the 2021/22 season.
The club has played an important role in the development of Gaelic football at both university and inter-county level. Over its long history, University of Galway has provided a platform for many outstanding players who have gone on to represent their counties at the highest level, including some of the most celebrated names in the history of the Sigerson Cup.
Success has extended beyond the Sigerson Cup, with University of Galway teams having won numerous league titles, Freshers Championships, Intermediate Championships and Junior Championships across the years. These successes reflect the depth of talent within the club and its commitment to providing competitive football for players at every level.

University of Galway Men’s Gaelic Football Club has a proud and distinguished history in the Sigerson Cup, having won the competition on 23 occasions. The university’s first success came in 1912, with subsequent victories spanning more than a century of intervarsity Gaelic football.
The university’s Sigerson Cup victories came in:
1912, 1921, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1950, 1954, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1992, 2003 and 2022.
The most recent success came in the 2021/22 season, when University of Galway lifted the Sigerson Cup, with Matthew Tierney captaining the team to victory.

These players form part of a long tradition of outstanding footballers who have represented the university at Sigerson level before going on to make their mark in Gaelic football at inter-county level.
University of Galway has also enjoyed considerable success at Freshers level, with the university having won the Freshers Football title on nine occasions, most recently in 2005 and 2006.
The Freshers competition provides an important pathway into university football, allowing new students to experience intervarsity competition and develop within the club before progressing through the Intermediate, Junior and Senior teams.
The university’s Intermediate and Junior football teams have also enjoyed significant league and championship success over the years.
In the 2015/16 season, University of Galway won the Freshers B All-Ireland Division 3 League, defeating Sligo IT in a closely contested final.
That same season, the Junior team won the Connacht Junior Championship, also defeating Sligo IT. The team subsequently reached the All-Ireland Junior Championship semi-final, where they were defeated by a well-drilled Garda College side, who went on to claim the All-Ireland title.
The success of the Intermediate, Junior and Freshers teams demonstrates the depth of football within the university and the club’s ability to provide competitive opportunities for players across all levels.
Training times vary between teams and are dependent on player availability, coaching arrangements and the stage of the season.
As the season progresses into the post-Christmas championship period, training schedules may become more intensive, with morning and weekend sessions taking place where required.
All teams compete in league competitions before Christmas, followed by their respective championship competitions after Christmas.
