University of Galway fields mens gaelic football teams in senior, intermediate, junior and two fresher teams each season. A club committee is formed following an AGM at the start of the season in late September/early October. The training and games at home take place in the college GAA grounds in Dangan sports centre up past the Westwood hotel. the club was formed in 1910 taking part in the Sigerson cup winning it in 1912. The college colours are maroon and white with white and maroon the secondary colours.

History

University of Galway are the current Sigerson Cup Champions. Overall, they are Ranked second in the Sigerson roll of honour with 23 sigerson cup titles garnered mainly between the 1930s and 1970s with most recent success in the 2021/2022 season. UCD has the most with 31. The football club is one of the oldest clubs within the college and has boasted over the last near 100 years some of the great players of Sigerson history and who went on to gather full acclaim on the intercounty stage. University of Galway has won numerous titles in leagues, fresher championships, intermediate and junior championships. The college has hosted the sigerson tournament on many occasions winning it for the first time in 1912.

Achievements

University of Galway has won the sigerson cup 23 times. The years being 1912 1921, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1950, 1954, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1992 and 2003 and 2022. The last six winning captains have been Matthew Tierney 2022, Padraig Monaghan 1980, Gay McManua 1981, Richie Lee 1984, Tomas Tierney 1985, Sean Og De Paor 1992 and Lorcan Colleran 2003. NUI Galway has won the fresher football title on nine times the most recent in 2005 and 2006. The intermediate and junior football sides have also tasted league and championship glory. Since then University of Galway has won the Fresher B league All Ireland in the season 2015/2016 when they defeated Sligo IT in a closely contested game to capture the Division 3 league title. In the same season the Junior concurred the Connacht Junior championship beating Sligo IT also but unfortunately lost the All Ireland Semi final to a well drilled Garda college team who later went on to win the Junior championship.

Meetings

Training times vary for each team and depend on availability of players and mentors. Training for most sides takes place on Monday evening and Wednesday evening with senior teams out on perhaps Tuesday. When championship time comes around after christmas training might occur in the morning and weekends. All the teams play in pre christmas league and post christmas championships. Contact the GAA officer on (087) 9840184 for training times at the start of the season, check the noticeboard in the Kingfisher or come along to the clubs day which occurs in the first week of the new term in September.
