Muay Thai

The art of the eight limbs: the most effective striking discipline.

Muay Thai is the most effective striking discipline, as can be seen in its Thai competition, and the many other areas it has being incorporated, i.e MMA.

We train Tuesdays at 20:00 and Fridays at 18:00 in the Kingfisher Sports Hall 1.

All you need is water, hand wraps (~5€ in any sports store), runners, and comfortable clothes.

Muay Thai is one of the most popular sports clubs in NUIG, and the biggest martial art. Muay Thai is often referred to as the science of eight limbs as it employs not only punching and kicking techniques, but elbows and knees as well.

Over a thousand years ago, when the Thai warriors had settled and the clans were unified into a proud and independent nation, a manual of warfare, the 'Chupasart' was written. All of the ways of fighting that the clans had evolved from centuries of battle was put into it. The 'Chupasart' showed how to fight with knives, swords, spears, battleaxes, pikes, cross bows. It became the bible of the warriors and the school book of fighting skills to teach the young. The warriors taught the young men but they trained from this remarkable manual of armed combat without weapons. The shinbone became the staff of the pike to block and strike. The arms became the raised twin swords of defence. The fist, the jabbing tip of the spear. The elbow, the battle axe to smash and crush. The knee too axed its way through the defences. The flashing foot, a pike, arrow and knife. Each part of the body became a weapon and a new close combat fighting skill emerged. A new martial art . . . Muay Thai . . . Thai Boxing.

History

NUIG Muay Thai was established in 2004 and began with under 10 members, now we have over 900 registered members.

Achievements

We have a number of fighters from NUIG that have fought on an amateur and a professional level, nationally and internationally. In 2016 we held a sellout event in the Black Box hosting fights. The four nations title holder Mike Harty is coached under our previous coach, Dave Joyce.

Anyone who has a dream to fight can achieve that dream through NUIG Muay Thai with hard work and commitment.

Meetings

Training is Tuesday at 20:00 and Thursday at 18:00 in Kingfisher Sports Hall 3.
