Rugby (Men & Women)

Ollscoil na Gaillimhe (University of Galway) has a long and proud history of rugby in Galway. Since co-founding the IRFU in 1874 the club has won more Connacht Cups than any other club in the province. Over its many successful years at senior rugby the club has contributed numerous players to international university sides, and at full international level, 10 college players have been selected to play for their country, 4 while still members of this club, perhaps the most successful among them Ciaran Fitzgerald (Irish and Lions captain).
  • Both of our men's teams were promoted last year, and the J1's will now play J1A for the coming season and the J2's will play in the J2A league for the coming season 23/24

Rugby Scholarships on offer;

Unlike most rugby clubs the University of Galway Rugby clubs offers a wide variety of scholarships including;

  • New Zealand Scholarship - the opportunity to go to New Zealand and play for Whangamata Rugby club. For the past number of years we have been sending 3 men out to play for this team and have been part of winning the premier league this year. We also offer the same scholarship to the woman’s team sending two woman to play with the haurakinorthdiamonds and the woman also had a lot off success as they were runners up in the Waikato final. The New Zealand scholarship runs every summer from the end of April - the middle of July.

Along with our New Zealand scholarships we also offer two other scholarships,

  • the Rugby Foundation scholarship and our Elite Rugby Scholarship.
