History

Many swimmers have come and gone over the years and they have all left their mark. Whether they are in our Learn to Swim classes, our Fitness Squad swimmers or our competitive athletes in swimming or water polo everyone has helped contribute to a positive atmosphere that keeps members coming back year after year.

While competitive swimming is only part of what our club offers, we are very proud of what our racing squad has achieved over the years and we have compiled our club records. Maybe you could be up there someday.

Tá neart snámhaí théis teacht agus imeacht i gcatheamh na mblianta agus rinne gach uile ceann acu imprisean aran gclub. Cé má tagtar ónár ranganna foghlama snámha, ár bhfoireann folláine, ár scuad rásaíocht nó ónár bhfoirne póló uisce, cuirtear go mór leis an deá-atmaisféar a mheallann ár mbaill bliain i ndididh bliana.

Cé nach bhfuil sa snámh iomaíoch ach codán don mhéad a chuireann ár gclub ar fail, táímid thar a bheith bródúil as buanna ár scuad rásaíocht thar nab liana agus tá curiarrachta an chlub curtha le Chéile again. B’fhéidir go mbeidh d’ainm ina measc lá éigin.

Achievements

At the University of Galway Swimming, Water Polo and Lifesaving Club we pride ourselves on our achievements in and out of the pool. You can find our Intervarsity track record below and 2025 a very good year for both our swimming and our water polo squads.

The 2024-25 season was also a big year for us because it was the club’s first year affiliated with Swim Ireland which allowed us to send our swimmers to the Winter and Summer Nationals and the Irish Open which was a massive step for us as a club and an incredible experience.

Apart from our competitive swimmers and our water polo players, we want to say how proud we are of our Learn to Swim groups. Over the years it has been an honour to see people come into their own in the water and become strong, confident swimmers.

We are also proud of our community-oriented accomplishments. We hosted our first Relay Gala as a way to reach out to local swimming clubs and encourage younger swimmers to stay involved with swimming through university and beyond. It was a great success and earned us Event of the Year at the 2025 Sports Awards. In the last few years, we have taken part in Coldvember and this year we organised a fundraising charity swim for Laura Lynn to engage with the broader community outside of the pool.

2025 was a strong year for the club at the University of Galway Sports awards too. We have already mentioned the success of our Relay Gala but we also came away with Coach of the Year for the one and only Sébastien Locteau, we got our first Gradam Gaeilge and a Director of Sports Award.

We take pride in all our achievements and we hope to continue the good work well into the future.

I gClub Snámha, Póló Uisce agus Tarrtháil Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, táimid thar a bheith bródúil as an méid atá bainte amach again laistigh and lasmuigh den linn snámha. Is féidir ár gcuriarracht raoin óna gComórtais Idir Ollscoile a fheiceáil thíos agus bliain íontach a bhí ann dár scuad rásaíocht agus dár bhfoirne póló uisce.

Séasúr mór ba é 2014-25 dúine toisc gurb é an chéad bhliain dúinn bheith comhcheangailte le “Swim Ireland”, rud a lig dár snámhaí páirt a ghlacadh sna comórtais náisiúnta Geimhridh agus Samhradh, agus an “Irish Open”. Céim ollmhór a bhí ann don chlub agus taithí do-chreidte dúinn uilig.

Seachas ár snámhaí iomaíocha agus ár n-imreoirí póló uisce, caithfidh muid rá cé chomh bródúil is a táimid as ár ngrúpaí foghlama snámha. Onóir atá ann daoine a fheiceáil thar na mblianta dul i dtaithí ar an t-uisce agus fásadh ina shnámhaí láidre muiníneacha.

Freisin, táimid an-bhródúil as ár n-eachtraí pobal-dhírithe. Chuireamar ár gcéad “Relag Gala” ar siúl chun lámh a shíneadh amach do chlubanna áitiúla agus chun daoine óga a mhealladh bheith páirteach sa spórt tríd an ollscoil agus amach anseo. D’eirigh go h-íontach leis agus thuill sé duais Ócáid an Bhliain dúinn sna Duaiseanna Spóirt 2025. Ar feadh roinnt bliana anuas, ghlacaimis páirt i Coldvember agus d’eagraíomar ócáid snámha tiomsaithe airgid don charthanacht Laura Lynn i mbliana chun bheith páirteach sa phobail taobh amuigh den linn snámha.

Bliain láidir a bhí 2025 don club sna Duaiseanna Spóirt Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Tá bua ár “Relay Gala” pléite again cheana féin ach chomh maith le sin bhuamar “Cóitseálaí an Bhliain”don bhfear é féin, Sébastien Locteau, bhuamar ár gcéad Gradam Gaeilge agus fuaramar “Director of Sports Award.”

Táimid mórálach ar fad as ár n-éachtaí go léir agus tá súil againn go leanfaimid ar agaidh leis an deá-obair amach anseo chomh maith.
